Spend data on a granular month-by-month basis is valuable to local tourism marketers, but the overall trend -- significant increases in annual spend -- is an even more important signal that more money is on the way, no matter which month it's spent in.

Foreign tourists spent more money in the United States in December, almost $16 billion, than other other month in 2013. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported Tuesday that tourism spending by foreign tourists in the U.S. reached a record $181 billion last year, a 9 percent increase over 2012.
