New ships are essential to any cruise line refining its brand identity. From a pure business perspective, it's surprising one of the major cruise lines hasn't purchased part of a shipyard in order to better integrate its ship construction pipeline into its overall operation.

Cruise lines are in the midst of a building boom, but the reality is that cruise ship construction is controlled by a small group of companies. Almost all cruise ship production globally is controlled by four major shipyard holding companies: Fincantieri in Italy, Meyer Werft in Germany, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan and STX Europe.
