American Airlines Offset Half Its Fuel Costs With Higher Fares, But Cuts Profit Outlook

Pricing power has emerged as a major theme of second-quarter earnings as airlines look to make their pricing gains permanent.

American Airlines said Thursday that it was able to offset half of its fuel expenses in the second quarter through higher fares. 

Higher fares also gave American a revenue boost, with the carrier reporting a record revenue of $16.7 billion in the second quarter, a 16.3% increase. The carrier made a profit of $71 million.
