Add expensive hotels and ancillary costs to the fee charged by airlines to fly with pets and taking a pooch on the road quickly becomes a luxury that makes traveling with kids seem cheap.

Traveling with a pet can be time-consuming, frustrating, and expensive, and fewer U.S. travelers are planning to put up with the hassle and costs this year. The number of Americans planning to travel with a pet dropped from 71 percent in 2012 to 44 percent this August in TripAdvisor's pet travel survey.
