Greedy, greedy, greedy. Keeping the bidding to low-cost carriers would indeed inject some competition into airports where it is at times sorely lacking, as well as protect consumers that the U.S. Justice Department said it was looking out for in the American/US Air lawsuit.

We would totally put any of these logos on a t-shirt! But seriously, airline branding is a serious multi-billion dollar matter, and smart airlines are using their distinctive logos to stand apart. Or should.

The majority of Americans don't care one way or the other if American Airlines and US Airways merge, even if the Justice Department is advocating on their behalf.

American Airlines has a lot on its plate these days, and it's a huge company. An internal team focused on startups helps the airline earn goodwill among entrepreneurs, and the team can put startups in touch with the right people at the airline who can lend a hand.

Don't expect American Airlines to exit bankruptcy anytime soon. Emerging from bankruptcy without the merger issue resolved isn't an option.

The lawsuit shows in graphic detail that the merger would cripple competition on more than 1,000 domestic routes, and that's a deep challenge to the airlines' contention that there is overlap on merely a dozen routes.

Today marks the beginning of what is expected to be extensive haggling between American, US Airways, and the DOJ. With enough concessions, the airlines still have a shot at completing their merger.
