In today’s marketplace, it’s not enough for an airline to simply have an app. Cutting-edge functionality, efficient tools and, yes, fun bells and whistles are needed to engender consumer loyalty and drive increased revenue. The new app from Singapore Airlines ticks all the boxes and provides a new model for the industry.

Southeast Asian countries have a grand vision for visa-free travel, massive infrastructure projects and more airline competition to grow route networks. However, too much bureaucracy and political unrest stand in the way for this to become a reality in the near-term.

With little budget and even less originality in marketing, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations may be better off focusing on facilitating tourism growth through infrastructure and other improvements, which it is adept at, than launching another Visit ASEAN Year.

The 10 nations of ASEAN are increasingly tourism dependent, and need common policies and branding to continue building up in a sustainable way, and stay away from bad examples in parts of Thailand and Cambodia.
