Poor geography knowledge is a bane of nearly every destination's existence. Natural disasters are an unfortunate opportunity for tourism officials to educate travelers, even if many will always struggle to read a map.

Southwest began its life in 1971 as a short-haul airline shuttling commuters around Texas. So perhaps it is fitting that it will try to do something similar in Hawaii. But expect Hawaiian Airlines to vigorously defend its turf.

After years of hinting, Southwest will finally fly to Hawaii. This is good news for passengers, as fares may fall — if only slightly. Other airlines won't want to let Southwest win too much market share.

No doubt destinations are hoping that visitors will return when islands have a chance to recover and clean up. Old habits and geography are in their favor.

Many travelers are generally more open to using new technology than other groups. But the pay-off has to be clear and transparency is paramount for a campaign like this to work.

At a time when a lot of brands are looking into virtual reality and 360-degree video to immerse consumers in a destination, this campaign proves that incredible visuals and a killer sense of perspective go a long way toward building brand awareness, and making consumers feel like they're right there with you.

What's not to love about Hawaii? The extended codeshare service between JetBlue and Hawaiian will also strengthen both airlines by creating new connections from the East coast to the islands, and beyond, for travellers from the U.S. and Asia.

These destinations are getting right to it: They offer a world to discover.

It's hard for Hawaii to attract cruise ships due to outdated government restrictions. An attempt to grow the state's cruise business is only natural at a time when cruise lines have dozens of new vessels on the way.

It appears as though Virgin America might beat Southwest in being the first of the two to fly to sunny Honolulu as both airlines look to expand beyond the lower 48. Southwest already has 10 international routes to seven countries but doesn't yet fly to Hawaii.
