With Priceline buying Kayak, Expedia investing in Trivago, and TripAdvisor launching hotel metasearch, all the big players have a piece of the pie, and this will have many delightful twists and turns.

Kayak's tagline has been "search one and done." All too often travel metasearch sites have launched and soon been "done." The biggest challenge for the new crop -- even the best ones -- is how to get their brands out there so travelers will use them.

On a logical basis, TripAdvisor might be sitting in an advantageous position as Priceline-Kayak and Expedia-Trivago battle it out. But, there's always the chance that Priceline and Expedia may not follow the script.

The other shoe just dropped. TripAdvisor has the global scale to be a leading hotel metasearch player if it doesn't scare off its largest customers.

Priceline and Booking.com should feel some heat from Expedia and Trivago in Europe, where Kayak faces the sentiment that it is an American interloper.

Now that Google owns ITA, Amadeus fills a need for Kayak, Hipmunk and Expedia, but we're skeptical that the quality of Amadeus Meta Pricer is up to the task.
