The AI Memory Question That Will Reshape Travel

AI memory and who controls it is about the fundamental architecture of customer relationships in an AI world. The companies that get this right will define the next era of travel.
Last week at Skift Global Forum, I posed a question to Bret Taylor, Chairman of OpenAI and founder of Sierra: "Should travelers own their AI memory, or should platforms like ChatGPT control it?"
His response was illuminating. "Maybe," he said, "and I think consumers will go where the experiences are best. I actually love the way ChatGPT does it. It's changed my life... I like the way it works across my devices."
Then came his most revealing insight: "The thing that I think is the opportunity for people in the [travel industry is], what does it mean to give your AI agent the appropriate memory?"
Bret wasn't dodging the ownership question, he was pointing to something more fundamental. AI memory quality has become the determining factor in user experience, and that insight should terrify and inspire every travel company in equal measure.
