Trip.com’s Key Travel deal shows its ambition to challenge Western TMCs, but breaking into entrenched markets will test its mix of tech and and human touch.
Trip.com Group has added a piece to strengthen its global corporate travel ambitions with the acquisition of UK-based Key Travel’s operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Canada's Globespan Travel Management then bought Key Travel's U.S. division.
For China's Trip.com, which is among the largest online travel companies in the world, the deal positions its corporate arm, Trip.Biz, to expand in specialized sectors while punctuating its push into the Western travel management company market. Travel management companies are travel agencies that handle business travel for corporations.
Globespan's plans are to operate Key Travel's U.S. business, and like Trip.com, will benefit from Key Travel's focus on nonprofits and humanitarian groups.
Terms of both acquisitions were not disclosed.
