The airline CEO carousel is spinning fast. Many boards are executing orderly transitions, but others are reacting to unexpected developments.

A late Monday announcement that Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle is stepping down immediately was the latest data point in a clustered sequence of leadership moves that have swept across aviation.

Since mid-November, nine airlines have announced CEO appointments and/or departures.
