The Louvre enacted a steep price hike, but its officials must believe the added cost won't discourage visits to one of the world's most famous museums. It's counting on more than $23 million in added revenue.

A trip to the Louvre just became substantially more expensive for many travelers.

The world's most visited museum raised admission prices by 45% on Wednesday, increasing the standard ticket from 22 euros ($25) to 32 euros ($37) for most non-European visitors. The change is part of a national "differentiated pricing" policy announced early last year that has been rolled out across France's major cultural institutions, including Versailles Palace and the Opera.
