Nice try Airbnb, but New York authorities do not appear ready to even temporarily lift the ban on short-term rentals during the World Cup.
New York City’s strict short-term rental rules are boosting occupancy across the Hudson River in New Jersey, which will host the Morocco–Brazil match during the World Cup’s opening weekend at MetLife Stadium, temporarily renamed as New York New Jersey Stadium.
Short-term rental occupancy for June 13, the day of the match, is up 169% year over year in the Jersey City–Newark area, compared with a 37% increase in New York City, according to AirDNA.
On June 27, when England faces Panama, short-term rental occupancy in the Jersey City–Newark area is up 296%, compared with a 51% increase in New York.
