As intra-Asia travel picks up, destinations are waking up to the fact that payments are now core travel infrastructure. Sri Lanka’s bet is simple, if Asian travelers live inside super apps and e-wallets, that’s where tourism growth needs to happen too.
Sri Lanka is stepping up its push for Asian tourists.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and LankaPay, the country's national payments network, are partnering with the unified wallet gateway Alipay+ to attract Asian travelers.
“With over 40 international partners, including leading e-wallets and bank apps in Asia Pacific region, reaching over 1.8 billion user accounts, Alipay+ will actively promote travel to Sri Lanka through targeted campaigns designed to attract high-value tourists,” Alipay+’s parent body Ant International said in a release on Tuesday.
The initiative will allow users of Alipay+ partner wallets to have access to targeted promotions and incentives when paying via LankaQR in Sri Lanka. This move is aimed at shaping travel choices and driving higher in-destination spending
