American Airlines CEO on M&A: We Have a ‘Long History of Being Aggressive’

The airline industry has a high appetite for M&A right now as executives expect high fuel prices to further strain already struggling carriers.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said Thursday the carrier is not considering consolidation right now but signaled openness to M&A opportunities. 

“In regard to consolidation in the industry, we're focused on American Airlines. We're focused on delivering on our core initiatives,” Isom said in a call with analysts. 

But Isom also said American would be at the “forefront” of any potential M&A and partnership opportunities that open up. 

“Now of course, if there are opportunities from a consolidation perspective or if there's assets that become available in the marketplace, American has a long history of being aggressive,” he said. “We've got a lot of experience. And whether it is the potential for M&A or the work
