Kenny Jacobs has certainly helped soften some of the rougher edges during his time at Ryanair, but plenty of challenges still remain for the no-frills airline that's committed to high growth. How will the low-cost carrier go about navigating them after his departure?

Airlines are much more comfortable talking about mitigating climate change through incremental changes such as more efficient aircraft and carbon offsets. But these don't alter the fundamental problem. Flying is bad for the environment, and it's only going to get worse as demand keeps rising.

Wizz Air is probably right to steer clear of trying its hand at long-haul flights, at least for the moment. CEO József Váradi's assessment seems correct — the industry is still waiting for the right aircraft to come along.

Well, well, well, who was expecting that? Not only did Norwegian beat stock market expectations on profitability, it announced details for its long-awaited joint venture and teased plans about a bold new direction.
