Delta is generally considered the most fiscally sound of the U.S big three, and that likely won't change soon. But Delta, like its competitors, needs to come up with a cohesive strategy on how to challenge the discount airlines beginning to move into the trans-Atlantic market.

Considering how tight the labor supply is, and how much U.S. pilot unions dislike Norwegian Air, it will be interesting to see how many applications the airline receives. Then again, pilots love flying big modern jets, and the Boeing 787 is about as good as it gets.

The Norwegian Air saga has taken another unusual turn. But fear not, travelers. The airline will keep flying between the U.S. and Europe, and the airline will continue offering low fares.

We believe that a partnership between Norwegian and Ryanair makes sense and could take off with few complications. But we don't believe converting long-term rivals to new friends is done easily in aviation. Still, if anyone could argue until this gets done, it would be O'Leary--with credit going to Willie Walsh. That alone is a remarkable thing.

Norwegian hopes to capitalize on its growing fleet to offer Europe's largest network of direct transatlantic routes. Set backs in Cork aside, CEO Kjos wants to put all the Dreamliners and Boeing 737 MAX the airline has on order to good use.

What can we say? Yellow and Gold make Green. With the high demand to attend St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Dublin, New York and Boston, this announcement could not be better timed.

Ensuring adequate competition in airports large and small gives those airports more negotiating power against the big three national carriers, and could ensure adequate infrastructure for more visitors from abroad to spend their travel dollars in the US. This last is, after all, the mandate of organizations like the US Travel Association.

It's unlikely the DOT will be able to stall Norwegian Air International's foreign air carrier application for much longer, and then we'll see how much fare disruption is really in the carrier's arsenal.
