This is quite a communications blunder. A premature announcement of a leadership change last week had to be corrected after the PAL board met Monday. In short, the PAL chairman's daughter, Vivienne Tan, won't be leading the airline after all. Maybe someday.

No one should be surprised that Vivienne K. Tan has taken over the top post, but it could've been done more stylishly. Aside from the boardroom drama, PAL is interesting to watch as it undergoes an internal shake-up led by a new younger chief. And — at last — a female airline chief.

A much improved PAL catches the eye of ANA, which aims to expand in Asia. The Philippine industry hopes it will greatly improve the slower growth in arrivals being seen from Japan.
