Google-owned Waze is a compelling navigation app, but whether Google can turn it into the foundation for a winning ride-share service will have to be tested in the marketplace over the next few months and years. Google is a latecomer to the field, although the sector is likely to undergo more disruption and a revolution in years to come.

As app-based ride-hailing services become widespread in personal use, it's no surprise that corporate travel use is also increasing — even if some employers aren't fully on board yet.

Hertz knows it needs to get more involved in ride-sharing to keep itself relevant but isn't yet sure what that solution is. It doesn't see its current Lyft partnership as strategic, but it was still willing to test the ride-sharing waters.

Lyft still has lots of ground to cover if it wants to catch up to Uber's business with corporate clients, but the company is smart to get in front of managers who make decisions about employee travel.

Prices for ride-hailing services will one day have to reflect the real cost of doing business — from realistic fares to local rules and regulations — and when that happens consumers won't be as nearly in love with them as they are now.

Rental cars have felt some of the burn during Uber's rise but this data show they still have a foot in the game if they can create smarter marketing tactics and make doing business with them simpler for business travelers.

The Avis Budget CFO said its core business and Zipcar haven't felt a major impact from ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft. When the punch eventually comes it could be Zipcar that takes the body blow.

Lyft needs more financing to keep the wheels of its operation running and expanding, but being recognized as a more human form of ride-sharing is even more important to attracting and keeping users.

One can expect more such ride-sharing retrenchments as on-demand car services flex their apps.

In the 1928 U.S. presidential campaign, the Republicans argued that a victory for Hoover would mean "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage." Likewise, Uber's campaign to woo European cities promises a chicken in every pot and a lot fewer cars and garages.
