The impact of a government shutdown on travel is unclear this time around, given the possibility of mass layoffs. It is also unclear how long a shutdown would last.

As Democrats and Republicans in Congress struggle to reach a compromise on a short-term spending bill, it is a possibility that the government could shut down after September 30. 

The Trump administration has been preparing for mass layoffs within the federal government in the event of a shutdown, according to Reuters. Historically, government shutdowns have led to furloughs of thousands of federal workers. There are also some concerns that a shutdown this time around could last for a while, partly due to the scheduling of the congressional calendar, according to The Washington Post. 

However, there is a chance that Democrats and Republicans could reach a last-minute deal: President Donald Trump is set to meet with congressional leaders Monday afternoon to avert a shutdown.
