Avelo Airlines Ends ICE Deportation Flights

Avelo’s CEO acknowledged the flights put it at the center of a “political controversy” but also said the business model wasn’t working.

Avelo Airlines is ending its controversial program to carry out deportation flights for the U.S. at the end of January, according to a spokesperson for the airline.

The ultra-low-cost carrier is closing its base in Mesa, Arizona, which is where it was operating deportation flights for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

“Avelo will close the base at AZA on January 27 and will conclude all participation in the Biden and Trump DHS charter program,” a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement. “The program provided short-term benefits but ultimately did not deliver enough consistent and predictable revenue to overcome its op
