Travel Industry Warns Against DHS Threat to Halt Customs at ‘Sanctuary Cities’

Halting customs at Newark — one of the busiest international hubs in the U.S. — would be a logistical nightmare for airlines.
The travel industry is warning against threats from Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to halt customs at “sanctuary cities” in the U.S. just two weeks ahead of the World Cup.
Mullin told “Fox and Friends” Thursday that Customs and Border Protection would consider pulling agents from Newark Liberty International Airport because DHS needs to deploy federal police officers to respond to protests in New Jersey against the Trump administration’s immigration policy. He has been escalating the threat in recent days, but the White House has not signed off on the proposal, according to CNN.
“We need to prioritize federal police officers, and that may impact international flights,” Mullin said.
