IndiGo Chairman Admits Failures, Rejects Claims Airline ‘Engineered’ Meltdown

For IndiGo, the past week exposed how quickly a large, tightly scheduled network can unravel, and how hard it is to restore confidence once it does. The airline’s brand has long been built on punctuality and predictability. The scale and speed of this disruption challenge both.

IndiGo has pushed back against claims that last week’s nationwide flight chaos was anything but a system under strain. In his first public statement since the disruptions spiraled, IndiGo chairman Vikram Singh Mehta denied that the airline had engineered the crisis or attempted to influence India’s new pilot duty rules.

He said, the airline is bringing in external technical experts to understand why issues that started on December 2 snowballed into one of the largest operational meltdowns India has seen.

"The board has decided it will involve external technical experts to work with the management and help determine the root causes and ensure corrective action so that this level of disruption never occurs again," Mehta said.

India’s aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also called IndiGo's top management for a meeting on Thursday.
