United CEO: 10% Credit Card Cap Would Hit Rivals Harder

Co-branded credit cards are one of airlines’ most lucrative assets but some carriers would be affected more than others.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said Wednesday he thinks the carrier would see little impact if the Trump administration’s proposal for a 10% interest rate cap on credit cards happens.

“I'd say that while much remains uncertain, of course, United's portfolio would be impacted. But in our view, it would be impacted a lot less than just about everybody else,” he said during a call with analysts.

Kirby added that MileagePlus credit cardholders tend to have higher credit scores and don’t default on payments.

“These factors make us different than most non-airline co-brand programs and maybe even a lot different from a lot of other airline co-brand programs,” he said.

United has been in “constant contact” with its partner Chase about the issue, Kirby said.&n
