‘Nobody Wants to Pay More’: TotalEnergies CEO Blames Airlines for Green Fuel Roadblocks

If fossil fuel producers like TotalEnergies won’t invest in green jet fuel, the aviation industry’s climate goals could be grounded.

The CEO of the oil giant TotalEnergies took aim at the airline industry this week, accusing it of lobbying against his industry and warning that Europe’s green jet fuel mandates are destined to fail.

“Airline companies are making a huge lobby against us accusing us of not investing enough in sustainable aviation fuel,” said Patrick Pouyanné, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos.  “The cheapest way to make fuel is with oil. Biofuel is two to three times more expensive.”

Planes at EU airports must contain at least 2% sustainable aviation fuel, an alternative to fossil fuels made from sources such as plant oils and agricultural waste. That requirement will gradually
